Prof Satoshi Araki publishes an article on educational inequality in Higher Education.

9 May 2024

Professor Araki's new paper "Assessing educational inequality in high participation systems: The role of educational expansion and skills diffusion in comparative perspective" has been published in Higher Education ( https://doi.org/10.1007/s10734-024-01232-y ). In this article, using large-scale comparative data from the OECD Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC), Prof Araki examined how the strength of educational inequality varies across societies. The analysis shows (1) parental education and children's educational attainment are strongly associated in all target countries; but (2) this intergenerational transmission of education weakens in highly skilled societies (with the larger proportion of population possessing high cognitive skills). The paper further argues its potential mechanisms and important agendas for future research.
