This course examines some of the current debates, controversies and methodologies in criminology. The main topics include: border criminology (human trafficking and control); visual criminology (visual representations of violence and ethics), cultural criminology (dark tourism and consumption), activist criminology (social injustice and activism), southern criminology (global inequalities) and victimology (state violence and the Bhopal 'disaster'). Its overall objective is to provide students with the criminological knowledge and conceptual tools to think critically and comparatively about crime and criminal justice in a global context.
An ability to understand main criminological concepts and debates and associated key works.
An ability to assess competing assumptions and rationales in the study of crime and criminal justice in the local and global context.
An ability to develop a reasoned argument and to present ideas in a clear and concise manner in oral presentation and in written work.
